Scale as an expressive tool with Stephen Procter

For many potters, larger scale on the wheel seems like the Grail that would open endless new expressive possibilities. Yet how to begin? The prospect of going big is daunting. This workshop will give you insight, techniques and skills to take home and start scaling up in your own way.

In the morning we start with discussion and conversation in which we will explore aspects of scale and reflect on the signature qualities of our own work and what it brings to the world: what does scaling up mean to you as a maker?
This will be followed by a demo in which Stephen will show techniques that any intermediate-level potter can use to build large vessels on the wheel. You may be surprised to learn that in some ways, throwing big is easier than throwing small!

After lunch we continue with the hands-on workshop in which you can explore and practice yourself, guided by Stephen. You will each have a wheel and there will be lots of clay!

For this workshop you need to work comfortably with 1 kilo of clay.

Price includes:
use of clay, lunch, coffee, tea, refreshments.
Work you make during the workshop will not be kept or fired. There is the option to purchase materials should you choose tot take work home.
